about students’ assessment of the 10-11classes
in the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate
1. General regulations
This regulation has been worked out according to the document of the International Baccalaureate Organization (further IBO) “Diploma Programme assessment. Principles and practices”
Teachers of the IB Programme should be acquainted with the mentioned above document and should follow the principles stated in it.
Assessment in the Diploma programme is carried out by the teachers of the school within the internal assessment.
For the purpose of students’ preparation for external assessment teachers will provide the current assessment according to external assessment requirements.
Teachers are in charge for responsibility for the organization and carrying out of current assessment and also for students’ preparation for external estimation.
1.6. The programme coordinator is responsible for the organization and carrying out of external assessment according to the IBO requirements.
1.7. The CAS coordinator is responsible for the realization of the of СAS programme requirements.
2. External assessment features
External assessment is carried out in May according to schedule presented to IBO. Test examinations are organized in March-April in order to define the students’ preparation level for the examinations.
The teacher defines deficits, gives feedback to the students and possibility to eliminate the educational deficits before the session.
External assessment checks the level of knowledge and skills declared in the programme of each course.
2.4. External assessment is carried out by the experienced independent examiners who are also practicing DP teachers .
2.5. DP teachers represent opportunities to students to acquaint with external assessment criteria and requirements at the beginning of the 10 form and also to monitor progress towards meeting the course aims and objectives.
3. Features and the organization of internal assessment
3.1. Internal assessment is a performance of a certain kind of work in each subject (essay, experiment, presentation, portfolio, oral comment etc.), which is carried out during the 10-11 classes and will be completed by 1 March (an extended essay, an essay linked to TOK, an essay linked to literature), by 1 April in all other subjects.
Teachers and students are guided by the internal calendar defining terms of carrying out of some work stages of internal assessment.
Objects of internal assessment are cogitative abilities (to assess the information qualitatively, to structure, to order, to analyze and to synthesize the information).
Internal assessment is carried out by school teachers according to the requirements stated in the programme of each training course.
Internal assessment works are exposed to be checked by the external expert. The mark for examination is put down with a glance to the school teacher’s mark
DP teachers give students opportunity to familiarize themselves with the internal assessments criteria and the requirements at the beginning of the 10 class.
4. Features and current assessment organization
Current assessment is carried out during the 10-11 classes.
On the basis of current assessment the mark is given for mid-term control, for a half-year and for a year in the 10 class.
In the11 class, current assessment is carried out till 1st March.
The records in the register are carried out till 1st June.
The approach to assessment is criterion related to current assessment. Criteria assessment is the process of the assessment based on giving points according to in advance developed criteria/headings.'
The content of criteria/headings is defined by the corresponding descriptions (descriptors) explaining levels of student achievements of given ability.
By working out of the personal criteria/headings the teacher should use IB DP teacher support material of the subject.
Current assessment is not the measuring tool of the student’ level achievement, but it defines student’ weaknesses concerning educational results in the end of the course, helps the teacher and the students to correct the work, to eliminate possible flows and defects.
The assessment tools may be the analogous tasks of external and internal assessment (written and oral works, an essay, presentations, practical/laboratory works etc.).
Quantity of works of current assessment is not regulated. The given kind of assessment should be carried out as often as it is demanded by an educational situation (i.e. a stage of skill or knowledge formation is finished).
4.11. Teachers fill the forms for parents after finishing the 1st, 2nd half-year of the 10 class, and also after the 1st half-year of the 11 class in which the deficits and the ways of their elimination are given.
5. Giving points
Final student’ assessment is a collection of the assessments for each subject on a scale from 1 to 7 points (6 subjects х 7 = 42).
Essay linked to TOK and extended essay is assessed within the levels from A to D which are converted to the mark by means of the special table from 0 to 3 points.
The maximum score is 45 points.
The work in the CAS programme is not assessed in points, but it is necessary to pass a test in the form of written acknowledgement by the coordinator of carrying out the formal (150 hours) requirements and achievements of 8 educational results by the students.
The diploma is awarded in that case when the student has received from 24 to 45 points and has fulfilled all requirements.
Some points of the given Position can be changed according to the Diploma programme of the International Baccalaureate (IB DP).
